What this day is
Guru Purnima is Ashadh full moon, in the middle of Chaturmas. Vyasa is remembered, and so is whoever actually taught you. Gujarati homes visit a guru, a music teacher, or a parent who taught the tradition. The fast until evening, or until moonrise, is the older rule.
ગુરુ પૂર્ણિમા અષાઢની પૂનમ છે, ચાતુર્માસની વચ્ચે. વ્યાસ યાદ કરાય છે, અને જેણે ખરેખર શીખવ્યું તે પણ. ગુજરાતી ઘર ગુરુ, સંગીત શિક્ષક, અથવા પરંપરા શીખવનાર માતા-પિતાને મળે છે. સાંજ સુધી કે ચંદ્રોદય સુધીનો ઉપવાસ જૂનો નિયમ છે.
What to do
- Name the person who taught you and thank them today, in person or by phone. A gift is optional.
- Light a lamp. If you have a guru's photo, put flowers. If you do not, the lamp and the phone call are complete.
- A grain fast until the evening puja is the strict form. Farali food is the milder one.
- જેણે તમને શીખવ્યું તેમનું નામ લો અને આજે આભાર માનો, મળીને કે ફોને. ભેટ વૈકલ્પિક છે.
- દીવો કરો. ગુરુનો ફોટો હોય તો ફૂલ મૂકો. ન હોય તો દીવો અને ફોન પૂરાં છે.
- સાંજની પૂજા સુધી અનાજનો ઉપવાસ કડક રૂપ છે. ફરાળ હળવું રૂપ છે.
What to eat
- Fruit or one farali meal if you are fasting.
- A normal dinner after the evening thanks.
- ઉપવાસ હોય તો ફળ અથવા એક ફરાળ.
- સાંજના આભાર પછી સામાન્ય રાત્રિભોજન.
What to skip
- Do not turn it into a public performance of gratitude that embarrasses the teacher.
- New weddings still wait. Chaturmas is on.
- કૃતજ્ઞતાનો જાહેર તમાશો ન કરો જે શિક્ષકને શરમાવે.
- નવા લગ્ન હજી રાહ જુએ. ચાતુર્માસ ચાલુ છે.
