  What this day is

  Rishi Panchami is Bhadarvo Shukla Pancham, the morning after Ganesh Chaturthi. It is kept as a fast in honour of the sages. Women in many Gujarati families were taught it as a day to bathe, wear something washed, and eat once, without grain.

  ઋષિ પંચમી ભાદરવા સુદ પાંચમ છે, ગણેશ ચતુર્થીની બીજા દિવસની સવાર. ઋષિઓના માનમાં ઉપવાસ તરીકે રાખાય છે. ઘણાં ગુજરાતી ઘરે સ્ત્રીઓને સ્નાન, ધોયેલાં વસ્ત્ર, અને અનાજ વગરનું એક જમવાનું શીખવાયું છે.

  What to do

  • Bathe in the morning. Offer water and a few grains of rice or flowers toward the sun, naming the sages in whatever words you have.
  • One meal of farali food after the offering. A full fast until evening is the stricter house rule.
  • If Ganesh is still in the house, do his aarti as well. The days overlap on purpose.

  • સવારે સ્નાન કરો. સૂર્ય તરફ જળ અને થોડા ચોખા કે ફૂલ ધરાવો, જે શબ્દ આવડે તેમાં ઋષિઓનું નામ લો.
  • અર્પણ પછી ફરાળનું એક જમવાનું. સાંજ સુધીનો પૂરો ઉપવાસ કડક ઘરનો નિયમ છે.
  • ગણેશ હજી ઘરે હોય તો તેમની આરતી પણ કરો. દિવસ જાણીને ભેગા પડે છે.

  What to eat

  • One farali meal: potato, peanut, fruit, milk.
  • Sendha namak if the house uses it on fasts.

  • એક ફરાળ: બટાકા, સિંગ, ફળ, દૂધ.
  • ઘર વ્રતે સેંધા મીઠું વાપરે તો તે.

  What to skip

  • Do not make it a second Ganesh party. The mood is quiet.
  • Grain, ordinary dal, and a festive onion-heavy thali belong to another day.

  • તેને બીજી ગણેશ પાર્ટી ન બનાવો. મૂડ શાંત છે.
  • અનાજ, રોજિંદી દાળ, અને ડુંગળીવાળો તહેવારી થાળી બીજા દિવસની છે.
