દેવ દિવાળી
What this day is
Dev Diwali is Kartak Purnima, a month after the household Diwali. The story says the gods celebrated Rama's return, or Shiva's victory, with lamps. In Gujarat it is also the day of a morning pushya snan at a river or the sea, when people can travel. At home, lamps again are the festival.
દેવ દિવાળી કારતક પૂર્ણિમા છે, ઘરની દિવાળીના એક મહિના પછી. કથા એ છે કે દેવોએ રામના પાછા ફરવાની, કે શિવની જીતની, દીવાથી ઉજવણી કરી. ગુજરાતમાં જઈ શકે તે નદી કે સમુદ્રે સવારના પુષ્ય સ્નાનનો દિવસ પણ છે. ઘરે ફરી દીવા એ જ તહેવાર છે.
What to do
- If you can reach a river or the sea at dawn, bathe and offer water to the sun. At home, an ordinary bath and a lamp are the same idea.
- In the evening, light a row of lamps as you did on Diwali, fewer if you like. The doorway is the altar.
- A fast until the evening lamps is the traditional shape. Farali food is the compromise.
- પરોઢિયે નદી કે સમુદ્રે પહોંચી શકો તો સ્નાન કરો અને સૂર્યને જળ ધરાવો. ઘરે સામાન્ય સ્નાન અને દીવો એ જ વિચાર છે.
- સાંજે દિવાળીની જેમ દીવાની હાર કરો, ગમે તો ઓછા. બારણું જ વેદી છે.
- સાંજના દીવા સુધીનો ઉપવાસ પરંપરાનો આકાર છે. ફરાળ સમાધાન છે.
What to eat
- After the lamps, a light festive dinner, often with a milk sweet.
- Sugarcane and ponk, if the season has them, belong to Kartak.
- દીવા પછી હલકું તહેવારી રાત્રિભોજન, ઘણી વાર દૂધની મીઠાઈ સાથે.
- શેરડી અને પૌંક, ઋતુમાં હોય તો, કારતકના છે.
What to skip
- Do not repeat the firecracker Diwali. This night is lamps and water.
- Do not skip it because 'we already did Diwali'. It is a second, quieter invitation.
- ફટાકડાવાળી દિવાળી ફરી ન કરો. આ રાત્રિ દીવા અને જળની છે.
- 'દિવાળી તો થઈ ગઈ' એમ કહીને છોડશો નહીં. આ બીજું, શાંત આમંત્રણ છે.
