What this day is
Pradosh is the thirteenth tithi, kept for Shiva at the evening junction, roughly the hour and a half around sunset. Both bright and dark fortnights have one. When it falls on Dhanteras, do this puja and then Lakshmi's. The fast, if you keep it, ends after the twilight worship, not the next day.
પ્રદોષ તેરસ છે, સૂર્યાસ્તની આસપાસના દોઢ કલાકે શિવ માટે રાખાય છે. સુદ અને વદ બંને પક્ષે આવે છે. ધનતેરસે પડે તો આ પૂજા કરો અને પછી લક્ષ્મીની. ઉપવાસ રાખો તો સંધ્યાપૂજા પછી પૂરો થાય, બીજા દિવસે નહીં.
What to do
- Eat lightly or fast until sunset. Fruit is the usual allowance.
- At twilight, bathe a linga with water. Offer one bel leaf, or a flower if you have no bel. Light a lamp.
- Eat after the puja. Dinner is allowed tonight.
- સૂર્યાસ્ત સુધી હલકું ખાઓ અથવા ઉપવાસ રાખો. ફળ સામાન્ય છૂટ છે.
- સંધ્યાએ લિંગને જળથી સ્નાન કરાવો. એક બિલીપત્ર, અથવા બિલીપત્ર ન હોય તો ફૂલ ધરાવો. દીવો કરો.
- પૂજા પછી ખાઓ. આજે રાત્રે જમવાનું ચાલે.
What to eat
- Fruit through the day.
- A simple vegetarian dinner after the aarti. Farali food if you want the fast to feel strict.
- દિવસભર ફળ.
- આરતી પછી સાદું શાકાહારી રાત્રિભોજન. વ્રત કડક લાગે એ માટે ફરાળ.
What to skip
- Do not strip a bel tree. One leaf, or a flower, is the offering.
- Do not keep an ekadashi-style fast into tomorrow morning. Pradosh ends at night.
- બિલીપત્રનું વૃક્ષ ટાલું ન કરો. એક પાન, અથવા ફૂલ, અર્પણ છે.
- એકાદશી જેવો ઉપવાસ કાલ સવાર સુધી ન લંબાવો. પ્રદોષ રાત્રે પૂરો થાય છે.
