  What this day is

  Tonight is Kalaratri, night 7 of the nine. Chaitra Navratri is the spring nine nights, ending on Ram Navami. Gujarat does not treat it like the big garba Navratri of Aso. Homes that keep it install a kalash on the first night, or simply light a lamp, and tell the Ram story as the nights go on.

  આજે કાલરાત્રિ, નવમાંથી રાત્રિ 7. ચૈત્રી નવરાત્રિ વસંતની નવ રાત્રિ છે, અને રામ નવમીએ પૂરી થાય. ગુજરાત તેને આસોના મોટા ગરબા જેવી નથી માનતું. જે ઘર રાખે છે તે પહેલી રાત્રે કળશ સ્થાપે છે, અથવા માત્ર દીવો કરે છે, અને રાત્રિ વીતે એમ રામકથા કહે છે.

  What to do

  • On the first night, set a kalash with water, mango leaves if you can get them, and a coconut. Leave it in a clean corner until Ram Navami.
  • Each evening, light a lamp and offer a flower or kumkum. The form of the night can be remembered, but Amba is enough.
  • Read or play a little of the Ramayan if that is your house. A few pages count.

  • પહેલી રાત્રે પાણી, મળે તો આંબાનાં પાન, અને નારિયેળ સાથે કળશ મૂકો. રામ નવમી સુધી સ્વચ્છ ખૂણામાં રહેવા દો.
  • દર સાંજે દીવો કરો અને ફૂલ કે કુંકુમ ધરાવો. રાત્રિનું સ્વરૂપ યાદ રાખી શકાય, પણ આંબા બસ છે.
  • ઘરનો રિવાજ હોય તો થોડી રામાયણ વાંચો અથવા સાંભળો. થોડાં પાનાં પણ ગણાય.

  What to eat

  • A farali meal is common in homes that fast: potato, peanut, sabudana, fruit.
  • People who are not fasting eat an ordinary meal. This Navratri does not require a fast.

  • ઉપવાસ હોય તો ફરાળ: બટાકા, સિંગ, સાબુદાણા, ફળ.
  • ઉપવાસ ન હોય તો રોજિંદું જમવાનું. આ નવરાત્રિએ ઉપવાસ ફરજ નથી.

  What to skip

  • Do not move a kalash once you have installed it.
  • Do not expect the Aso garba grounds. This one is mostly at home.

  • કળશ સ્થાપ્યા પછી તેને ખસેડશો નહીં.
  • આસોના ગરબા મેદાનની અપેક્ષા ન રાખો. આ મોટે ભાગે ઘરે છે.
