What this day is
In the Gujarati calendar Hanuman Jayanti is Chaitra full moon, not the date some other regions use. Hanuman is the devotee who did the work. The home observance is a visit, a lamp, and the Chalisa. Strength, in this telling, looks like service.
ગુજરાતી પંચાંગમાં હનુમાન જયંતી ચૈત્ર પૂર્ણિમા છે, બીજા પ્રદેશોની તારીખ નહીં. હનુમાન કામ કરી બતાવનાર ભક્ત છે. ઘરની રીત મુલાકાત, દીવો અને ચાલીસા છે. આ કથામાં શક્તિ સેવા જેવી દેખાય છે.
What to do
- Go to a Hanuman temple in the morning if one is nearby. Offer sindur and a laddu, or flowers.
- At home, light a lamp and recite the Chalisa once. Reading a translation beside it is fine if the Sanskrit is unfamiliar.
- Oil and sindur on the murti are traditional. A picture gets sindur beside it, not smeared across the glass.
- નજીકમાં હનુમાન મંદિર હોય તો સવારે જાઓ. સિંદૂર અને લાડુ, અથવા ફૂલ, ધરાવો.
- ઘરે દીવો કરો અને ચાલીસા એક વાર બોલો. સંસ્કૃત અજાણી હોય તો બાજુમાં અનુવાદ વાંચવો ચાલે.
- મૂર્તિ પર તેલ અને સિંદૂર પરંપરા છે. ફોટાની બાજુમાં સિંદૂર રાખો, કાચ પર ઘસશો નહીં.
What to eat
- Laddu as prasad, then a normal vegetarian meal.
- A fast until the temple visit is common and not required.
- પ્રસાદ તરીકે લાડુ, પછી સામાન્ય શાકાહારી જમવાનું.
- મંદિર સુધીનો ઉપવાસ સામાન્ય છે, ફરજ નહીં.
What to skip
- Do not keep the South Indian or North Indian date if your house follows this calendar. Chaitra Purnima is the Gujarati day.
- Do not skip the Chalisa because you think you need a priest. One reading at home is the festival.
- ઘર આ પંચાંગ પ્રમાણે ચાલતું હોય તો દક્ષિણ કે ઉત્તરની તારીખ ન રાખો. ચૈત્ર પૂર્ણિમા ગુજરાતી દિવસ છે.
- પુરોહિત જોઈએ એમ સમજીને ચાલીસા ન છોડો. ઘરે એક વાર વાંચવી એ જ તહેવાર છે.
