What this day is
Nag Pancham is Shravan Shukla Pancham, a day for nag deities, the sisters and brothers of snakes in the old household cult. Gujarat offers milk, draw a nag in turmeric or kumkum, and thanks the unseen ones who live in fields and foundations. A live snake is not a murti.
નાગપંચમી શ્રાવણ સુદ પાંચમ છે, નાગ દેવતાઓનો દિવસ, જૂના ઘરસંસ્કારમાં સાપના ભાઈ-બહેન. ગુજરાત દૂધ ધરાવે છે, હળદર કે કુંકુમથી નાગ દોરે છે, અને ખેતર તથા પાયામાં રહેલા અદૃશ્યોનો આભાર માને છે. જીવતો સાપ મૂર્તિ નથી.
What to do
- Draw two snakes with turmeric on a wooden board, or use a printed image. Offer milk, a flower, and a lamp.
- Farming families may offer milk at a known anthill or a field edge. Pour it on the ground. Do not wait for a snake to drink.
- Brothers and sisters sometimes exchange a sweet. That part is family custom, not a requirement.
- લાકડાના પાટિયા પર હળદરથી બે નાગ દોરો, અથવા છાપેલી આકૃતિ રાખો. દૂધ, ફૂલ અને દીવો ધરાવો.
- ખેતી કરતા ઘર જાણીતા વામરિયા કે ખેતરની ધારે દૂધ ધરાવે. જમીન પર રેડો. સાપ પીવે તેની રાહ ન જુઓ.
- ભાઈ-બહેન ક્યારેક મીઠાઈ આપે. એ કુટુંબનો રિવાજ છે, ફરજ નહીં.
What to eat
- Laddu, or milk sweets. A normal vegetarian lunch after the offering.
- No fast is required.
- લાડુ કે દૂધની મીઠાઈ. અર્પણ પછી સામાન્ય શાકાહારી બપોરનું.
- ઉપવાસ જરૂરી નથી.
What to skip
- Do not catch, corner, or pour milk into a snake's mouth. That injures the animal and is not the vrat.
- Do not kill a snake you find in the house today and call the rest worship. Call someone who can move it.
- સાપને પકડશો નહીં, ફસાવશો નહીં, અને મોંમાં દૂધ ન રેડશો. તે જીવને નુકસાન કરે છે અને વ્રત નથી.
- ઘરમાં સાપ દેખાય એટલે આજે મારીને બાકીની પૂજા ન કરો. જે ખસેડી શકે તેને બોલાવો.
