  What this day is

  Durga Ashtami is Aso Shukla Atham, the eighth night, sacred to Mahagauri. In Gujarat this is often the strict fast of Navratri and the night of a communal havan. Garba still happens. The fast and the dance are not enemies.

  દુર્ગા અષ્ટમી આસો સુદ આઠમ છે, આઠમી રાત્રિ, મહાગૌરીની. ગુજરાતમાં આ ઘણી વાર નવરાત્રિનો કડક ઉપવાસ અને સામૂહિક હવનની રાત્રિ છે. ગરબો ચાલુ રહે છે. ઉપવાસ અને નૃત્ય વિરોધી નથી.

  What to do

  • Keep a grain fast if you can. Light the lamp before you leave for garba.
  • Join a havan if one is organised. Standing at the back and offering a spoon of ghee, if asked, is full participation.
  • Mahagauri is described as bright and calm. White flowers are a nice offering. Red still belongs to Amba.

  • શક્ય હોય તો અનાજનો ઉપવાસ રાખો. ગરબે જતાં પહેલાં દીવો કરો.
  • હવન ગોઠવાયું હોય તો જોડાઓ. પાછળ ઊભા રહેવું અને કહે તો ઘીનો ચમચો ધરાવવો એ પૂરી ભાગીદારી છે.
  • મહાગૌરી ઉજ્જ્વલ અને શાંત કહેવાય છે. સફેદ ફૂલ સારો અર્પણ છે. લાલ રંગ આંબાનો જ રહે.

  What to eat

  • Farali food after the evening puja, or fruit through the day.
  • Break fully, with a normal meal, only if your house ends the fast tonight. Many wait for Navmi.

  • સાંજની પૂજા પછી ફરાળ, અથવા દિવસભર ફળ.
  • ઘર આજે રાત્રે ઉપવાસ પૂરો કરે તો જ સામાન્ય જમવાનું. ઘણાં નોમ સુધી રાહ જુએ.

  What to skip

  • Do not skip the lamp because the havan is elsewhere. The house still needs its own light.
  • A waterless fast is not the rule here. That belongs to Nirjala Ekadashi.

  • હવન બીજે છે એટલે દીવો ન છોડો. ઘરને પોતાનો અજવાળો જોઈએ.
  • પાણી વગરનો ઉપવાસ અહીંનો નિયમ નથી. તે નિર્જળા એકાદશીનો છે.
